Over 20 Years of Legacy
The University of Buffalo Kendo Club was founded over 20 years ago by our current Head Sensei, Samuel Cappiello (7th Dan). Seeking to expand and deepen his passion for the art, he set out to share the experience of kendo with new initiates. In the winter of 2003, Cappiello Sensei founded UB's first Kendo dojo in the winter of 2003 at the university's North Campus.
On January 22nd, 2004, UB Kendo officially met for the first time. Today the club has grown to become one of the largest martial arts clubs at the University of Buffalo. The club welcomes students across all backgrounds, requiring no prior experience in kendo—just a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. Many students have joined to not only enjoy a challenging sport in the common goal of self improvement.
Our club was created on the basis of bringing together people from all backgrounds of life, identities, and cultures. We are both a university club and a dedicated dojo, committed to rigorous practice and discipline. While we welcome anyone to begin their journey in kendo, we also uphold high standards of training that challenge our members to grow and perform at their best.
Our mission is to provide a space where members can challenge themselves physically and mentally while building discipline, confidence, and mutual respect. We believe in inclusivity and community: kendo is not only about competition, but also about supporting one another, learning together, and carrying forward the values of respect, perseverance, and personal growth outside of kendo.
We believe kendo is best experienced as a community, where everyone can share in its spirit and appreciation.
